Under the artistic direction of Louis Vuitton, Atelier ATHEM has been working on adapting Yayoi Kusama’s vision to the scale of the luxury fashion house's iconic store in Paris - Place Vendôme, causing a stir across the capital.
To celebrate the launch of "Creating Infinity", the Studio has installed some 60 chrome lenses and half-spheres on to the facade of the flagship store and in the window displays. Inspired by the Japanese artist’s work, these mirrors of different sizes and shapes seem to evoke a dialogue of many voices, between the street and the building, Kusama and the Vuitton fashion house, customers and onlookers, and 18 th century architectural heritage and contemporary art.
One of the key challenges involved in constructing this ephemeral work of art relates to its design, carefully devised to render its structure almost invisible, just like a building site where work takes place behind the scenes, mainly at night. This Place Vendôme project is another example of the collaboration between Atelier ATHEM and Louis Vuitton, which began nearly 20 years ago with the creation of iconic trunks for the flagship store on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées.
